How do colostomy bags work?

A colostomy bag is a medical device used to collect waste from the digestive system when a person has undergone a colostomy surgery. In this procedure, part of the colon (large intestine) is brought to the surface of the abdomen through an opening called a stoma. The colostomy bag attaches to the stoma, where it collects stool as it exits the body. The bag is designed to be discreet and secure, allowing individuals to go about their daily lives while managing their waste in a clean and hygienic way.

Where to buy colostomy bags?

Colostomy bags are provided by the NHS, and can be delivered straight to your door, completely free of charge using Vyne. Vyne is like a digital pharmacy, but specialises only in medical devices, like stoma bags – we request a prescription from your GP for the devices you need, then deliver them to you completely free of charge. Alternatively, Vyne also has an online shop where you can buy a huge range of medical devices (like colostomy bags), which are all available with next day delivery.

What does a colostomy bag look like?

A colostomy bag typically looks like a small pouch made of soft, flexible material, usually in a neutral colour like beige or clear. The bag has an opening, often with a flange or adhesive ring, which attaches to the skin around the stoma. The bag may also have a clip or hook & loop closure at the bottom, allowing for easy emptying. They are designed to be low-profile, so they can be worn discreetly under clothing.

Do colostomy bags smell?

Colostomy bags are designed with odour-proof materials to prevent any smells from escaping. When used and maintained properly, they should not produce any noticeable odour. However, if the bag is not sealed correctly or if it needs to be changed, there may be some odour. Regular cleansing, proper sealing, and using deodorising products can help manage and prevent any potential smells.

How many main types of stoma bags are there?

There are three main types of stoma bags:

  • Colostomy Bags: Used when the stoma is connected to the large intestine.
  • Ileostomy Bags: Used when the stoma is connected to the small intestine.
  • Urostomy Bags: Used for urinary diversion, collecting urine directly from the kidneys.

Each type is designed to handle the specific output of the stoma, whether it's stool from the intestines or urine from the kidneys.

Are colostomy bags permanent?

Colostomy bags can be either permanent or temporary, depending on the underlying medical condition. In cases where part of the colon is removed permanently due to conditions like cancer or severe inflammatory bowel disease, the colostomy may be permanent. However, some colostomies are temporary, intended to give the bowel time to heal after surgery, and the colostomy can be reversed later.

What causes colostomy bags?

Colostomy bags are needed after a colostomy surgery, which is typically performed due to medical conditions such as:

  • Colon or Rectal Cancer: If part of the colon or rectum is removed.
  • Diverticulitis: Severe cases where parts of the colon are damaged.
  • Traumatic Injury: To the abdomen, where the colon is affected.
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, where sections of the bowel may need to be removed.
  • Congenital Conditions: In some cases, babies are born with conditions that require a colostomy.

What does a colostomy bag do?

A colostomy bag collects waste (stool) that would normally pass through the colon and out of the body through the rectum. Instead, after a colostomy surgery, waste exits the body through the stoma and is collected in the bag. The bag holds the waste until it is emptied or changed.

How are colostomy bags attached?

Colostomy bags are attached to the body using an adhesive flange or wafer that sticks to the skin around the stoma. The flange creates a secure seal, preventing leaks and keeping the bag in place. Some bags are one-piece systems, where the flange and bag are integrated, while others are two-piece systems, where the bag can be detached from the flange for easier changing.

How often should a colostomy bag be changed?

A colostomy bag typically needs to be changed every 3 to 5 days, depending on the type of bag, your skin's sensitivity, and how full the bag gets. You should empty the bag when it’s about one-third to half full to avoid leaks. Regularly changing the bag and the adhesive flange is important to maintain good hygiene and prevent skin irritation around the stoma. Always follow your clinicians guidance regarding how often you should change your stoma bags.
