Going to hospital during coronavirus

Since the coronavirus outbreak, there has been a significant decline in the numbers of people attending accident and emergency departments across the country. Despite all the recommendations to socially distance, it's important you seek advice and attend hospital if you're significantly unwell.

In the event of an emergency, you should still call 999 immediately. Staff at the hospital will be taking all necessary precautions to keep you as protected as possible from the moment you arrive.

What if I have symptoms of coronavirus?

It's crucial you follow NHS guidance on what to do if you have coronavirus symptoms. If these symptoms are mild, you should stay at home for 7 days. Anyone you live with should stay at home for 14 days. It's important you don't leave the house during this time, even if you start to feel better. This applies to leaving the house for essentials such as food and medication. Why not look into home delivery services which can deliver all your essential items direct to your door? In the event of a medical emergency, you should still dial 999 and advise the call handler you're currently self-isolating with symptoms of coronavirus. They'll be able to notify the paramedics.

Worsening symptoms?

If you have coronavirus symptoms which have worsened or you develop new symptoms and you're unsure what to do, you can always use NHS 111. The NHS has developed an online coronavirus service. This will provide advice on what to do based on your current symptoms. Alternatively, if you dial 111, you'll be able to speak to a clinical advisor who will be able to make similar recommendations based on the results of a telephone assessment. If you feel it's an emergency, dial 999 immediately.

Pre-existing appointments

If you have a pre-existing medical appointment or are awaiting surgery, it may be that your appointment is postponed. This will be managed on a case-by-case basis. Many recent cancellations have been due to medical staff being re-allocated into different roles to help in the fight against coronavirus. If your appointment has been cancelled, you'll be notified in due course when this can be rescheduled for.
